Mencap Sparkle Evening

Posted by admin2556 on February 13, 2013

Last Friday, Master Trades attended the Super Sparkle Evening at Moorlands Junior School in Bath, to raise money for Mencap's Super Saturday Club based at Threeways School, Odd Down.

The Super Saturday Club is for children aged between 5 and 18 with learning difficulties, such as autism and Downs Syndrome.

Grenville Jones, Baths Music Man, attended a singing session one Saturday last year and was so inspired by the children that he wanted to arrange a special trip for them. He asked the organisers what they thought the children would like, and they immediately responed with "A trip to Disney Land Paris"!

So Grenville made it his mission to raise the £20,000.00 needed to take the 18 children on a trip of a lifetime.

Through his various choirs, one of which, Choirskool, is attended by Naomi and Oliver's daughter Alice, Grenville and his team organised fundraising events, produced a Christmas CD and last Friday was the Super Sparkle Evening.

Jenny McKim, who sings in one of Grenville's choirs and who is a good friend of Naomi, organised the evening with Heather Kale and Grenville.

The evening was thoroughly enjoyable with the Gavin Lazurus Band playing throughout the evening, and various people singing a range of songs.

There was also an auction with items such as a Mulberry Handbag, a meal at the Bath Priory, spending the day with a professional horse trainer.

As Master Trades supports the Bath Ladies Rugby, Naomi thought it was a good opportunity to ask them for a signed rugby shirt, and also if the could put it a good word with Bath Rugby. Which they did.

So with the help of Sarah Burgess and Vicky Heslop from Bath Ladies, Naomi managed to get hold of a signed Bath Rugby Shirt and a signed Bath Ladies t-shirt. Together these fetched a very respectable £140.00 for the event.

The evening raised over £3000.00 and has brought the fundraising up to its target.

So the children of the Super Saturday Club are off to Paris this May.
